Glasgow Print Studio presents an exhibition of new work in print by Scottish artist and teacher Peter J Scott.
Peter's work references the social geography of Glasgow and the surrounding areas where he grew up or visited in his formative years.
“Our life experience informs and fuels our imagination and ideas. The experiences we have, the people we meet, the stories we hear, the stories we live, those who we love or have loved and those we have lost. It’s all inside us it makes up who we are.
Everything in my drawing is an echo of experiences remembered or shared. In recent times I’ve expanded on my resources to include a broader range of imagery from other cities across Europe, particularly Germany where my wife comes from. The buildings and backdrops used are more of a metaphor for the visual storytelling, as the shapes and colours in the buildings provide the narrative I aim to create within the work.
As with almost all my recent work, music is influential on how I collage images together as it informs a lot of the idea, it signifies the experience or time I am referencing in the work."
Peter has produced a zine to accompany the exhibition. With a focus on imagined and slightly surreal fictions based on memories and stories from the 1990's, the zine contains stories that are an imaginative response to the era. Peter says that the characters and events are fictions for a ‘post truth’ era.
"The stories are inspired by music and songwriting. But I am no musician so instead these words are designed to ask the viewer to access and reflect on the era they know best themselves. What do you know that informs the work?"
Peter J Scott graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2001. In 2005 he trained as a teacher and has taught full time in Scotland since 2006.
