Maya McMahon-Boon

Maya McMahon-Boon’s  Featured Artist exhibition presents a new series of large woodblock prints, incorporating contemporary methods of laser cutting with traditional block printing. Having worked extensively with intaglio printmaking processes over the last few years, Boon has recently been exploring relief printing.

Boon describes her work as being “of the landscape” - an interest rooted in space, boundaries and velocity, a study of architecture and manmade structures. Her practice is currently heavily motivated by her printmaking process and has been previously described as “both technically refined and intuitively led”. Her interest in materiality allows for development across several different visual languages - despite walking a tightrope over complete historical abstraction, each work has been composed within an iterative framework, developing itself more each time from drawing to re-drawing to re-drawing. By working strategically from one diagram to the next, each repetition finds its equilibrium whilst “playing a game of balance and imbalance”. Boon’s work has a “joyous and sensitive experimentation of mark making, colour, paper and engagement with inks” - it’s bold yet subtle, talking assertively but with calmness.
